Or else it takes super-speed to keep track of the cups as they move at super-speed. Something any FISS should be able to do… or perhaps someone who was once a FISS, like Ron?
That depends. In most comics, FISS type characters tend not to have reflexes that are high enough to allow them to track things effectively at super-speed.
And if to win you need to get it right five times in a row, your odds if you just guess each time are worse than a thousand-to-one. Hence your chance to keep getting it right.
Or, it could be that at some point the glass, with the ball, has approached the back edge and been dropped into a box secreted there for that purpose. Should you ever find someone playing this game tell them that the the first couple of tumblers are empty, and show the surrounding crowd. Then say that by deduction the ball MUST be under the one remaining cup, “Shall I lift it?”
It’s incredible how often I’ve won using that technique. And don’t allow them to argue that you are only allowed to touch one cup, unless that was stated up front.
She’s a gadget specialist. “Cheating” is exactly how a gadget specialist should roll – nothing should work exactly as it would commonly be assumed to work.
If Pistonic is of an engineering bent (and not just a science-bending creatrix of gadgets), I wouldn’t put it past her to have the game played in multiple rounds, given the 1/4 chance of correctly guessing in any one attempt. Given the robot’s reference to statistical sampling, it seems even more likely to me.
Though he did say only a statistically insignificant portion of the population “knows.” He didn’t say anything about how many could successfully guess.
I have to wonder if the ball is even supposed to stay under one of the cups. Presumably, one with the requisite power would watch and be able to say: “The ball was sucked into your hand, went up your arm, and is now under your hat.” (or “inside your left knee”, or whatever.)
I suspect, with Rock from the previous comment thread, that there may be some suspicious data acquisition going on here. “Winners” will presumably be entered into a database along with their recorded use of superpowers for. . . future recruitment? Some other purpose?
Could some of the data be getting back to the Headmaster of the Praetorian Institute for his schemes? Maybe he’s thinking of breeding programs? Or anti-breeding programs (make sure that two metahumans of certain powers never meet, or have any putative relationship quashed)? Or record potential weaknesses?
Create a hit list of who the Headmaster thinks needs to be eliminated first?
Breeding Program? Just wait a few years and the children will start figuring that for themselves.
Julie: Oh, Moonshadow …
Tyler: Uh, Julie. Are you okay? You were mumbling.
Julie: Just having a dream. I’m awake now.
Tyler: Are you okay? I mean it being your first time and all. You were like an earthquake there for a while.
Another thing that comes to mind is a trap door about the size of a cup. Put the ball under the cup and push it through the trap door. As the player (read: sucker!) is making his/her choice, load the ball from the box attached under the counter to show where the ball ended up.
I was thinking that in PS238 2/27/14, The headmaster was talking about how members with the same type of power who reproduced would have an omega 2 level child. Tyler’s mom and dad have the exact same power, so wouldn’t tyler be omega 2? Also, if because the parents have the same type of power, they might be related(gross, I know, but keep reading), and so this would possibly make Tyler a level one Omega? This has presumably never happened before, so they might not know if this would happen. Also, I do not think that with all the possible Tylers from “Time After Tyler”, it is possible he would not have powers. Also from that episode, the last Tyler told him that with no powers, “you might be the most important tyler of all.” Coincidence? I think not.
Firstly he clearly said that there was simply a “Greater than 50%” chance that the kids would be more powerful than the parents at all.
Secondly he said you needed a certain set of power LEVELS to get an Omgea 2 offspring. He didn’t say you had to match FISS to FISS.
The evidence is Argos. FISS almost exclusively breed with FISS there, and you haven’t got a world ender there.
Also just because they are related doesn’t mean they are both Omega 2, and breeding would get you an Omega 1. For example Tyler has no powers, Toby, despite having literally the same DNA, has vast Cosmic powers. Sometime genetics are wonky.
Well, Toby’s powers aren’t genetic; they were given by external forces. But just because Toby’s weren’t transferred genetically doesn’t mean that powers ARE NOT transferred genetically. Bernard is pretty solid proof that they can be/are, as is Ron (who, if he hadn’t been externally disempowered, would still be a FISS because of his father).
As well, it’s clear that the Powers don’t care if their son gets his superpowers from natural genetics or an external source; they kept thinking of ways to expose him to classic “power-granting accidents” and the like. They’d have been fine with Tyler getting powers by being bitten by a radioactive, genetically engineered robot, as long as he got powers (and those powers were impressive enough that they felt they were “worthy;” I suspect if he’d been able to point his finger and create a small red dot wherever he was pointing, they would have been pushing him in exactly the same way to find out how that laser-pointer power is merely the tip of a much grander iceberg).
But as long as he has powers, they don’t care if they’re genetic.
Actually there were numerous errors in the cloning. The imp and cherub unlocked them all at once. Hence is reality warping effects. Those are not gifts from outside. That gift is his independent sentience.
I’m pretty sure that the powers are part of the “gift,” because it was expressly stated by the duo that there would have to be balance in the order v. chaos he created for them to be able to work together to give him those powers. That’s why, when he does something, something else happens to “balance” it.
Honestly, I think he’ll get more interesting AND more powerful as he learns to control both “sides” of his powers. Clearly, he already controls either (he probably can cause chaos just fine…but have order align itself elsewhere to make up for it), but when he learns to recognize whether what he’s doing is orderly or chaotic, and to deliberately balance it with something else he wants (or at least doesn’t mind), he’ll be far more powerful…but his constraint will become “I can only actually do THIS much, because otherwise the counterbalance will be undesirable.”
You need to go back and reread that part of the story Segev, the agents of Order and Chaos had nothing at all to do with Toby’s powers they only ‘cut his strings’ as it were and provided him independent awareness and then later warped his powers so that they can’t do anything without creating a countering effect so if Toby does something Chaotic something orderly must occur, and vice versa. It was the ‘junk’ in the clone’s DNA compared to Tyler’s where he has the obviously active cosmic powers from (Von Fogg notes to Angie when she brings it up that he spotted it as well but figured if it was close enough percentage-wise to how the government thinks it was close enough for them).
This is very true, and I am going back to the same issue(Time After Tyler) to one of my favorite parts, where he calls his future self. I realize now that from that phone call, Tyler is going to grow up to be Moon Shadow( and what a cosutme!) and assist the Revenant. There still might be a chance that this will happen, although Tom might step in and change things (Where is He?) or Tyler might get Moon-Shadow-esque powers but still work with Revenant. The possibilities are endless, and I just want to say to Aaron: good job, give tyler superpowers, this is mind control.
Yeah, no. I am a fanaticism about superpowers, even though I’v never seen any movies, and all I want Aaron to do is to give him superpowers, like four elements, or maybe the one I made up(ask if you want details). Also, look back at that page where Tyler calls himself in the future. We can tell for mostly certain that he will be Moon Shadow, but then tom might bump him along. Speaking of which, where is tom? we haven’t seen him for a while.
There is also the possibility that, as the robo-barker rapidly randomizes the receptacles, the rubber ball is rubbed out. Flashed into ash by the force of friction.
As it’s not their dominant power, they tend to have their lightning fast reflexes on an on/off switch.
Or probability manipulation either passive or active
Or else it takes luck. 1/4 chance.
The problem with luck is, that you chance to keep getting it right goes down the more you try.
No, it doesnt. Your chance to succeed in choosing between 4 items at random is 1/4, whether you have previously succeeded or failed.
And if to win you need to get it right five times in a row, your odds if you just guess each time are worse than a thousand-to-one. Hence your chance to keep getting it right.
It might also work for super hearing, depending on the materials involved.
Or it’s a con like discussed in OOTS, and the ball is in the robot’s hand.
Or, it could be that at some point the glass, with the ball, has approached the back edge and been dropped into a box secreted there for that purpose. Should you ever find someone playing this game tell them that the the first couple of tumblers are empty, and show the surrounding crowd. Yeah, but Pistonic’s a hero. She wouldn’t create automated games that actually *cheat.* Surely not.
She’s a gadget specialist. “Cheating” is exactly how a gadget specialist should roll – nothing should work exactly as it would commonly be assumed to work.
It’s the shell game, it wouldn’t be honest if it didn’t cheat.
You have to be really careful walking away if you show them up. They don’t like losing!
Who wants to bet that Ron winds up picking the correct cup?
Does anyone else think this might be the moment when we get a hint of what Ron’s new powers are?
Certainly smells of foreshadowing to me…
Another option: the ability to sense whatever material the ball is made of.
(Also, can you neutralize pre-fog-no-give powers with a sed-a-give?)
Wait a ball game that isn’t rigged? Surely the world has gone mad.
Assuming the Robot ISN’T cheating (because it’s a free carny game for kids) you would also have a 1 in 4 chance of just guessing the right one.
Also a name like Piss-Tonic probably wouldn’t want to be heard around the pub, even if she is too old for the playground. :p
If Pistonic is of an engineering bent (and not just a science-bending creatrix of gadgets), I wouldn’t put it past her to have the game played in multiple rounds, given the 1/4 chance of correctly guessing in any one attempt. That robot reminds me of a villain who was controlling the rainmaker kids for some reason.
Doctor Irons? Yeah, I kinda get that vibe too. But I’m sure we’re all certain it’s not him.
Given that Dr. Irons is now organic-ish and bald, yes. We can safely say that we’re certain.
I have to wonder if the ball is even supposed to stay under one of the cups. Presumably, one with the requisite power would watch and be able to say: “The ball was sucked into your hand, went up your arm, and is now under your hat.” (or “inside your left knee”, or whatever.)

Create a hit list of who the Headmaster thinks needs to be eliminated first?
Given how “subtle” most of these kids are with their powers, I’m guessing anyone that wanted to know could probably figure it out for most of them.
Breeding Program? Just wait a few years and the children will start figuring that for themselves.

Tyler: Uh, Julie. Are you okay? You were mumbling.
Julie: Just having a dream. I’m awake now.

Im sure that a teleporter and wormholes are part of the game
How many chevrons need to lock to send the ball under the counter?

You’re making several faulty assumptions.
Firstly he clearly said that there was simply a “Greater than 50%” chance that the kids would be more powerful than the parents at all.
Secondly he said you needed a certain set of power LEVELS to get an Omgea 2 offspring. He didn’t say you had to match FISS to FISS.

The real fun starts, when folks discover that powers aren’t transfered genetically . . .
They left “genetic markers” that people with super-brains can identify and trace. So if they’re not genetic, they’re doing a good job of faking it.
Well, Toby’s powers aren’t genetic; they were given by external forces. But just because Toby’s weren’t transferred genetically doesn’t mean that powers ARE NOT transferred genetically. I did have one bot of conjecture on that. What if Revenant in the future is not the Revenant of now? But perhaps Cecil grows up to be his replacement.
Tyler already has a superpower. Being Moon Shadow. 😉
