Well, this is interesting. Firedrake makes an excellent point. Just like Pholgiston did, just like Tyler keeps doing…I don’t think this adventure is just about making 84 some amazing hero, I think it’s about making her a leader…and a teacher.
How much will the world of super hero’s change once she starts showing the other FISS what she’s learned? What happens when every super hero, no matter how common their power, starts making a statement every time they put on a mask? Hee! I can’t wait to see!
Well keep in mind that Conjurer’s observational skills are focused on the fog and magical aspects of things and the gate itself, and Firedrake’s got that Johnny Storm personality so has to touch things, whereas 84’s got neither the magical senses to focus on that or the attention-issues of the other so is free to pay attention to the more mundane. Which is one of the strengths of a mixed group like this, each covering for the other. Conjurer realizes that there are threatening magical forces hidden in things, Firedrake notices that the fog is actually at least semi-tangible since it can be handled, leaving 84 to realize ‘hey this tangible fog stuff is starting to surround us!’.
I’m a guessing now that fireman will be the next to go & in the end it will be down to magic guy & 84 (I do feel so sorry for #86, there are too many jokes there) & much to 84’s relief ye old god of some Slavic group or whatever will not choose her to nemesis.
They will come back to her in a while & complain about it though.
Agreed. Like Phlogiston and Neuronet, he’s played his role – like them, he’s come to realise that 84 is someone to pay attention to, and he’s taken the opportunity to teach her something about being a superhero. Conjurer has not.
You know, I wonder if our friend Veles hand-picked the other heroes for just that reason – to provide her with some education. He’s obviously considering her as potential nemesis material, but I wonder if perhaps he’s already made up his mind, and this whole adventure inside the egg is to help bring her up to speed?
Conjurer has taught her something, whether he realizes it or not. How not to be a leader and how not to be a team member. Well he also taught her how to be a jerk, but that goes without saying.
To be fair… well come to think about it even her villain team up had been a better “good guy ally” than bucket head so far. Come to think of it there seems to be something fishy about him. Our first hero showed hidden leadership and how to help guide a team. Our fishbowl hero showed taking charge directly and forcing people against their will… and got blow up with a lot of fan backlash.
Firedrake shows gimmicks and how to get the world to notice you. He also showed power actions. Just because you have fire powers doesn’t mean it will be useful for certain situations. Now we have bucket head… who has some talent, but doesn’t have the same charm as our two ps238 villains. I’m betting that bucket head will either be the cause of the next ring out… or we see that dark secret he is hiding… like the fact he is a villain!
(Cue sound effect and knockout gas along with counter argument)
I think #69 has it way worse, especially if they’re female. Even if many FISS start adopting their number I imagine he or she will stick with whatever ID they’ve currently got.
Nothing immature about pointing out the problems the FISS who decided to adopt their number when it was that one would have, the immature would be how everyone else responded to him/her over it.
I don’t know… Firedrake admitting that he knows nothing about dragons sounds like the set-up to a gag later. We know darn well there’s a dragon in there somewhere.
On another note, I know a lot about dragons, from video games, Wikipedia, and comics. I’ve got my own ideas on defining characteristics of dragons and what to call them if they are not full dragons. I could give this guy a sound lecture, if he was real. (My ideas are mainly based on what seems to be in common between definitions from various sources.)
Interesting… Do go on. Do your sources by any chance include Jung? I note that the Wikipedia article on dragons is short on references to his psychoanalytical theories on them.
Can’t reply to Northstar for some reason, so this goes here.
No, my sources stem from various fiction works I have read/experienced. This list includes Nodwick, Eragon, Gold Digger, Spyro, Pokemon, Lord of the Rings, and a few others. For authority on dragons, I tend to place Eragon, Spyro, Nodwick, and Gold Digger at the top, because their designs match the traditional European dragon the most closely.
Pokemon includes dragon types from all over the world, including European (Salamence) and Chinese (Gyarados). LotR uses a wyvern-style dragon (that is, wings are attached to forelimbs). Gold Digger uses dragons and wyverns, and differentiates between them. I like the Spyro idea of color-coded dragons. Eragon gives a great magic system. The main reason Legend of Zelda is not considered is that the Twilit Dragon Argorok is based on the pterodactyl-like Kargorok (and therefore wyvern-style) and Volvagia is a Chinese-style dragon.
Incidentally, the Wikipedia article on Jung makes no mention of dragons.
(Late, but you might come back around here at some point)
That’s rather Northstar’s point. Wikipedia is a terrible source, but I also wouldn’t seek advice concerning fictional/mythological dragons from Jung*. Jung’s psychological theory concerning dragons is on personality archetypes and psychological hurdles and challenges.
* Unless to seek professional psychological advice on how to deal with those personality types. On how to deal with actual dragons, scales, fiery breath, etc (or whatever type is now envogue), I’d seek knowledge elsewhere.
You are missing something. Veles is a trickster god. He wants / needs an opponent. Power is at best secondary to being a true opponent, an honest person. Phlo admitted she was defacto team leader and basicly tricked the public. Neuronet was an a**hole. Fire here just admitted that he is basicly a phoney, too. Magic man is out, because magic is nothing but tricks. The lesson julie get taught are what not to be, if you want to be a true opponent to a trickster god.
The business model for superheroes sounds a lot like the business model for superhero comic books. Superteams are assembled based on being catchy rather than effective in the field. Is the defense of Earth against supervillain takeover and alien invasion really funded primarily with licensing likenesses and logos for branded merchandise?
Not really. It’s just that federal and civic grants only go so far. If you want to have the expensive stuff like satellite bases, etc., you need some form of income. Not everyone has an entire company to draw from like some superheroes, after all.
And that’s another thing: sure, people owning multinational companies have money, but it’s not FREE money. You have to work your butt off to KEEP the money, and at any time 90% of it is bound up in investments. Thinking that a multimillionaire can play superhero and keep being wealthy is just naive. Unless, of course, he manages to make his super hero gig into a paying concern.
Or the super-powers to make money unnecessary (like Madison Jeffries after his massive upgrade in intelligence in Alpha Flight, his ability to reshape existing technology to mimic the human form expanded to where he could form Living Monolith-sized intersteller ships with warp drive from scratch simply by drawing in the raw elements from his surroundings). Most heroes have to either scavenge or do without.
Hm. Firedrake actually has a decent point. The main reason the F.I.S.S. powerset is so undervalued is because most of them don’t differentiate themselves. If all you are is “another X”, you’ll be forgotten; the key is to be something else first, then X afterward. In this case, be a superhero worth having first, a F.I.S.S. after.
Well, she does have common sense, highly observant, and willingness to work with a team going for her. And the fact that she is willing to learn. Something the so-called “expert” and “specialists” seem to ignore.
I am brought back to when they arrived at the park and Julie asked if the kid Godzilla could swim. The ‘flashy’ heroes were glad the mundane FISS arrived to take out the trash they were losing money showing up for the fight.
I think the Most is going to Hold them so they can not move, so no Hand movements from Magic Guy, But Flame boy may be able to Burn it off, and 84 could break out of it.
Well, this is interesting. Firedrake makes an excellent point. Just like Pholgiston did, just like Tyler keeps doing…I don’t think this adventure is just about making 84 some amazing hero, I think it’s about making her a leader…and a teacher.

I’m getting 80’s fog effect flashbacks…
Good advice and I see the pattern of 84 being the most observant of the group continues.
I’m starting to wonder what she does for entertainment. A lot of older cartoons had effects in the background that rewarded paying attention.
Maybe she should market her Netflix list to the adults?
84 doing an Infomercial would rock!

If he does turn out to be a villain, she could always track him down later and have Guardian Angel use her bat on him.
I think #69 has it way worse, especially if they’re female. Even if many FISS start adopting their number I imagine he or she will stick with whatever ID they’ve currently got.
That’s very immature. But also quite funny.

Him finding out about the digestive track of a dragon the hard way?
Silly Van, that’s Nodwick. Several hundred times.

Probably Souls. Like FF9 or something.
This is really turning into one heck of a learning experience for Julie and it makes me wonder how she’ll grow from this adventure.
You are missing something. Veles is a trickster god. He wants / needs an opponent. Power is at best secondary to being a true opponent, an honest person. I think the mist is simply going to grab them and hurl them through the Gate anyway.
Reminds me of the fog gates in Dark Souls, which means the first non-FISS through the gate gets flattened.
Hm. Firedrake actually has a decent point. The main reason the F.I.S.S. powerset is so undervalued is because most of them don’t differentiate themselves. If all you are is “another X”, you’ll be forgotten; the key is to be something else first, then X afterward. In this case, be a superhero worth having first, a F.I.S.S. after.

Attention to detail.
Well, if the news media caught any of their comments, they are likely going to lose some sponsors, or come out on the bad end of the negotiations.
I think the Most is going to Hold them so they can not move, so no Hand movements from Magic Guy, But Flame boy may be able to Burn it off, and 84 could break out of it.
Maybe the FISS need to study pro wrestling
Is this the lesson where they are taught not to fight?
“use sword on monster” domain has expired, and needs renewal. $$ anyone?
Just a heads up, useswordonmonster.com has expired. (and I was looking forward to the net update!)
That has been fixed. Sorry about that.
