She’s a fast thinker too – she didn’t have long to determine what was going to happen and react appropriately.
Of course, the fact that she would hate getting stuck with another useless lump to deal with if the sidekick bonded with her probably influenced her decision.
Man, if she’s this good at what she does as a grade school kid, imagine what she’s going to be like with another decade of experience under her cape (to coin a phrase).
I feel for her, I really do. It sucks when somebody takes you personal statement of pride and principles and turns into their political agenda and whines about how it proves the world is being mean to them. She seriously needs to just slap a few people. HARD.
Gah. My brain went on the fritz. I MEANT to say that he shouldn’t skip the ‘s in his singular possessives. I have no idea how Oxford commas came into it, though they ARE important.
That’s pretty much my guess as well. She’s turning into more of a superman-equivalent than the old Atlas ever was. If Veles wants to keep the old tradition alive, she’d be perfect. It’s always been about “straightforward, honorable warrior-type vs. sneaky underhanded trickster” (interestingly, in the original myth, both sides were regarded as “good”), and she fits that first role perfectly.
She would make the descent new atlas/(superman) for this. It’s kind of funny seeing how much life threatening situations and crazed moments that they are forced to run through that makes them more grown up than they actually should be.
Veles’ relationship with the old Atlas seems to be more of a friendly rivalry without much malice; he also doesn’t seem to be interested in fighting anyone other than the old Atlas.
Now that Veles knows where the old Atlas is, I think he is going to Argos (to either help Atlas pacify Argos or simply to wreak havoc).
Even if he doesn’t get his nemesis back, he is at least going to relieve his boredom by going against Atlas-leveled FISS.
If you read the mythology on Veles and Perun, the battles aren’t about relieving boredom, but symbolic for the rhythms of the seasons. Veles is quite a pleasant figure for a deity of the underworld, really. ^^
I think Argos could use some turnign of the seasons. I kind of think Atlas being that far away is kind of extreme absentee parenting. Consequences for him leaving have been all bad for his son. (can’t imagine Clark doing that after how he reached out to Billy Batson)
Atlas being on Argos is in no way his fault though:
Dax-Ra had his son at the time, and is probably the main reason why he agreed to go to Argos. He got stranded on Argos after Moon Shadow and Ron escaped since interstellar travel without a spaceship doesn’t seem to be part of the FISS power-set.
He agreed to the resistance’s request that he stay on as King because Argos is in need of a major social overhaul.
Also, no other spaceship on Argos is likely to have the coordinates of Earth; Dax-Ra wanted to keep the sole source of Argonite secret for his own use…
If he does, I’m guessing he’ll discover it’s not one of his ‘better’ decisions, as Julie has shown she is not averse to reacting rather forcibly against anyone who seriously ticks her off. (As an example, I refer people to the fate of the gold-plated goon who broke her ‘Steel Wear’ cape back in Issue #29…)
Dax-Ra did acknowledge that Julie/84 could pass as a royal on Argos, which is exactly why she was appointed as Earth’s ambassador to that planet. I read that as an expert opinion placing her in the same league as Atlas, albeit a much younger version. Also, she seems to be instinctively taking command here, and that is further proven by the “Infinite Vanguard” (who all resemble Atlas in their power set) deferring to her. I’m thinking she’ll politely tell Veles off and he’ll decide that she is a worthy opponent for his annual sparring match.
Well that was pretty much the idea, the military didn’t want the replacement to be strong-willed, they wanted someone they could easily push around and manipulate. Just their bad luck that he’s actually not completely a drone and has decided to help make life better for all FISS by increasing their social status, since true heroes are notorious for telling governments and the military what they can go do with themselves when they try and get away with wrongdoing for any reason.
He may not be the hero they deserve, or the hero they need right now… or the hero they wanted, for that matter, but he’s the only Argosian they’ve got!
And his ability to be easily lead is a useful trait. For other people to exploit.
Actually, it’s just as acceptable to leave off the extra s after an apostrophe in a singular possessive if the word ends in s already. You just have to be consistent about it.
It appears that Julie is going up towards Veles with mayhem on her mind. He may not have designated her as his foe but she certainly is locked on to him.
I noticed that you are using PNGs… and are having some nasty quality loss. Have you compared a higher end JPG to the PNG? I understand that you are trying to save bandwidth on your website
Let’s see, Veles is a god of cattle while Perun was a god of rain. There might be a farmer vs. rancher thing between them. Wouldn’t some hero with weather control powers be a more appropriate ritual antagonist, like say the janitor at PS238 formerly known as Rainmaker.
84 is the smoothest!
Well, Julie is certainly determined to make Forak a proper hero… though that’s an interesting way to go about it…
You could have stopped after ‘determined.’
She’s a fast thinker too – she didn’t have long to determine what was going to happen and react appropriately.
Of course, the fact that she would hate getting stuck with another useless lump to deal with if the sidekick bonded with her probably influenced her decision.
Julie, saving the day using one Atlas at a time.
Nice “… I am so… darn-pooting… done with this” expression on Julie’s face in the last panel.
Guess who’s about to get herself a nemesis
Man, if she’s this good at what she does as a grade school kid, imagine what she’s going to be like with another decade of experience under her cape (to coin a phrase).
^ MASSIVE LIKE for this. 🙂
Seconded. 😀
Goldangit! Where is the ‘+100 LIKE’ button?
Perhaps she should get an internship with the Revenant.
honestly, i think it would be awesome if the Rev decided to covertly sponsor the team.. especially if they keep calling on ‘moonshadow’ for help..
Heck, she’s not even fully grown yet. Let that sink in.
In reply to Norman’s comment on the last panel – I guess we don’t get an answer to the question “Can Bert swim?”
I feel for her, I really do. It sucks when somebody takes you personal statement of pride and principles and turns into their political agenda and whines about how it proves the world is being mean to them. She seriously needs to just slap a few people. HARD.
And ]we have yet another example of why Edna Mode thinks capes are bad: 84 uses one as Forak’s leash .
You say that like it’s a bad thing.
So Forak is strong enough to carry a passenger.
I wondered.
Eesh. I get the feeling Forak and Bert deserve each other… How’d he ever become “Atlas’ best pal”?
Go take a look at the Silver Age Superman comics and ask the same question of him and Jimmy Olson.
Also, you may want to not skip your Oxford commas. They can prevent SO many problems. http://www.legalwritingpro.com/articles/D10-million-dollar-commas.php
where would you have him sprinkle commas into that sentence?
Gah. My brain went on the fritz. I MEANT to say that he shouldn’t skip the ‘s in his singular possessives. I have no idea how Oxford commas came into it, though they ARE important.
Agreed, a lot of amateur fiction writers use no commas and that also makes meaning impossible to decipher. Legalese doesn’t tell a good story.
Now taking bets that Veles will designate 84 as his new nemesis…!
That’s pretty much my guess as well. She’s turning into more of a superman-equivalent than the old Atlas ever was. If Veles wants to keep the old tradition alive, she’d be perfect. We all grow and mature due to our experiences in life…
There is clear evidence that your statement is not always true.
Hmm. We all have opportunity to grow and mature due to our experiences in life.
And be a laughingstock for having a schoolgirl for a nemesis?
He’s an immortal god – Atlas was a schoolboy next to him. She’ll grow up soon enough.
Yeah, he should probably wait. Take a nap for a couple of decades, see if anything interesting happens.
Veles’ relationship with the old Atlas seems to be more of a friendly rivalry without much malice; he also doesn’t seem to be interested in fighting anyone other than the old Atlas.

It’s not that he can’t fly through space, more that he doesn’t know where to go. Space is big.
If he does, I’m guessing he’ll discover it’s not one of his ‘better’ decisions, as Julie has shown she is not averse to reacting rather forcibly against anyone who seriously ticks her off. If he ever gets past the whole being a doormat thing, maybe he should take “Neo Atlas” or “Nu Atlas” as his personal ‘nom-de-guerre’.
How about Neutered Atlas? That fits for him.
Atlas de jour
How about “Lastlas”?
You actually managed to get “gee willikers” in there! I’m impressed.
It’s really not hard to see why 84 is getting her own fan club in the comic, she’s getting one outside of it too :P.
plus one!
Hey, get in line! 😉
She’s already got a town named after her – Eighty Four, PA. (OK, I know, the town came first, but it’d still be a great place for the fan club HQ)
I don’t know why, but I think Bert and Atlas Mk 2 are going to become even bester friends than he was with the original Atlas.
Yeah, I got that feeling, too. It might be good for both of them. ^^
Who’s idea was it to make Forak the new Atlas? Anyone whose spends ten seconds with him can see he’s not powerful or strong willed enough.

And his ability to be easily lead is a useful trait. For other people to exploit.
And there, in New Atlas’ hesitation, is why super heroes tend to be Alpha personalities. Quick decision-making abilities.
How many “Atla”s are there? Obviously there’s more than one, since you’re using plural possessive tense there.
Actually, it’s just as acceptable to leave off the extra s after an apostrophe in a singular possessive if the word ends in s already. You just have to be consistent about it.
Now THAT is useful application of a super’s cape.
If a PNG has quality loss, the problem is not the format.
Haha… “higher end JPG”…
JPG, no matter how high-end, will always have some quality loss; PNG is lossless.
So if there is quality loss, the problem is not in the final format posted to the site.
Am I the only one who thinks Bert looks a lot like the hulk-expy kid, especially in the facial region?
84 will literally drag Forak into heroism.
Let’s see, Veles is a god of cattle while Perun was a god of rain. There might be a farmer vs. rancher thing between them. Wouldn’t some hero with weather control powers be a more appropriate ritual antagonist, like say the janitor at PS238 formerly known as Rainmaker.
