We don’t really know that for sure. My money says that the Smoke Monster killed the dad, and the mercenaries from the freighter killed the mom.
And yes, they were embezzling money from their son, and were returning from a vacation in Australia. They were horrible people, and Zodon replaced them with nicer people… his own mom and dad. If he hadn’t done so, Alt!Zodon would definitely have ended up in an orphanage or the foster care system (not to mention that all of the money he’d made developing websites would still be in Swiss accounts, rather than in a trust fund for his college tuition.)
While a nice theory, we don’t have any proof that they were embezzling from their son. They could have been trying to hide the revenue to avoid taxes, which is why super-Zodon thought dad was embezzling from the company.
Not saying you’re wrong, just pointing out an alternate (heh) explanation.
It would make sense for the show. I mean not even the ending about that show made sense. So time traveling alternate reality super genius evil kid sending his own parents to replace the ones lost on the plane would work for Lost’s plot.
Then just say the machine caused the plane to crash also. Or say the real parents are stuck in a foreign country because the bank closed on them since the money was transferred back.
We get some more cameos by heroes who’ve never appeared before in the comic. That’s such an interesting aspect of “PS238”: Aaron devotes a lot of effort to giving each minor character an individual look, even if that character will only appear for one panel.
Anyone ever stop to think that if the WERE embezzling from alt.Zodon, then the father’s company suddenly got an infusion of cash they couldn’t account for! The alt.IRS on this dimension must have been VERY interested in that.
Does that mean the parents were taking their kids money and skipping town?
Pretty much.
Poor alt-Zodon…he’s having one heck of a rough day.
Well, he -did- insist on getting an answer…
So, the money was obviously for the “don’t blow up the plane I’m about to get on” fund.
I wonder whether Alt-Zodon’s folks really did embezzle that cash…
… and left their son behind as they went to have a new life. 0_0
They got on the same flight that was the basis for ‘Lost’, but were the lucky ones that didn’t survive.

I saw a couple of episodes of ‘Lost’ and was looking for a place to use it.
hehehehehehe.

Yup.
